Winter on film

Looking at these my love for film has been re-ignited. At first I thought they looked a bit "meh!", but I love the texture and grain that you get with film; it makes digital photography look so cold and flat. Speaking of cold, these pics are from February (see, there's no mad rush with film!) - a great month made all the better by a visit from Sandra & Johan.

  1. Oh I love so much old films and winter. So great. I'm in desperate need of cold and taking pictures.

  2. I notice you are using a light meter in the last pic. If you don't mind my asking, is it more advisable to do a light-test before exposing a film, even for the likes of me (=total amateur)? If it means the rate of photos turning out ok is higher, I guess I should start saving up for a light meter, cos I'm tired of wasting $ developing photos that didn't turn out as expected :-(

P/S: Thanks for sharing all your lovely photos, they often bring a smile to my face :-)

  3. marion: I also felt a yearning for winter when I saw this... strange that isn't it?

cheeky.cicak: I don't usually use a light meter, my hubby has one and he was just messing around. I hadn't used my film camera in a decade so we were just checking how the internal light meter fared against a proper one. as you can see the picture still came out underexposed :)

if you're having trouble with your camera I suggest you take lots of pictures at different exposures and keep notes as to what f-stop you used on what frame. I know now for instance to overexpose by a stop as the battery I need for my camera has been discontinued and the replacement one slightly misreads. if you think a light meter might be useful for you then the sekonic flashmate is not too expensive but I'm sure there are cheaper ones out there.

    hope that's helpful!

  6. I really love all these photos! I love the detail and texture you captured!
Are you light metering little mo? I have been saying to Jin that I REALLY want a light meter. I have been guessing with my hasselblad all this time, and it is starting to bug me.

  7. michka: hi! thank you! the film I used was fuji x-tra 400 ISO. nothing fancy.

hannah: indeed it is, it's so nice to go back in time! the fella's doing fine, kicking and generally getting a lot bigger. soon he won't be able to do somersaults in there...

celine: thanks lady! yep, the light meter came out but what do you know, I still underexposed! the hassy pix that I've seen look perfect, but you should definitely get one if you're getting fed up. maybe as a birthday/xmas gift perhaps? :0)

  10. wonderful, wonderful pictures. the muted colours and the texture. quite something else.

i've totally fallen for film too. only wish it was a bit more affordable or i could process and print the photos myself. but come to think of it, maybe it's not that bad. makes me think a bit more before i click...
