Help!

Dear friends, we need your help! We're about to re-carpet our hallway and are completely stumped as to which colour it should be. It seemed so easy in the shop, we'd get a grey carpet to go with the walls but once we got the samples home we became very uncertain. I would love to have a really colourful carpet; petrol blue, turquoise, yellow or a deep pink but couldn't find a carpet the right shade. The hubby is now keen on black which I find a bit scary. We both hate the colour it is now and will be so happy to see it go! My man also suggested having the stairs in a contrasting colour which could be fun... Anyway, I'm rambling. We didn't bring back a black carpet sample so you'll have to do with some black paper. So... out of these three, which one do you prefer? Your thoughts will be much appreciated!

  1. I prefer the middle paler grey but I'm wondering if a muddy, beigey, greyish mushroom-ey completely neutral mid tome might be best. Almost a deeper, duller greyer version of what you already have ... now try and find it. Wink. Definitely no to the black. Love your photos !

  2. Black will show every speck of dirt and need constant vacuuming. Like the idea of a pop of color!

  3. The middle one - although I do like the idea of having something brighter! Black would be bad - the vacuuming would never end - and if you have pets or ever get a pet it would be out of control!

  4. We have the same colour grey on the wall going up our staircase, and our carpet is charcol grey, with a slightly lighter mottling. It does show every bit...but that doesn't bother me. We added colour with bright yellow picture frames. From the picture I would say the middle lighter grey...only because it looks nice with the wall colour. I'd be inclined to agree with Susan above...either that, or a more charcoly grey! I am now rambling too...

  5. the middle one out of those three. but a more colorful one sounds good, too. but again, if you choose the light gray one you could always put a rug on it, if you want some more color :-)

  10. I like the middle one best! Black would probably get soooo dirty in a hallway!

  11. thats hard. i think the black is very stylish, but probably extremely hard to keep -so i vote for the lights grey in the middle... carpets are so hard.

  13. the one in the middle is the one that goes best with your walls i think, so it gets another vote from me!

  14. Middle one- it will make the room look lighter and you will not notice the dirt so much (not that it would ever be dirty, you know....)

  15. Hmm, am I the only one in world that thinks, of those three, the one on the right is best? I love the idea of a really colorful carpet more, though.

  20. I think the one on the right is a better contrast to the wall colour, I have a black carpet and it shows every spec of dust, don't do black......

  21. i would go for the middle one..

  22. what about charcoal? I saw a hall carpet that was charcoal but was ribbed that looked really nice but I don't know where it was from!

  23. thanks everyone for your input! we're leaning towards the middle one too, although we're going back to the shop to have a look at other colours... it's so difficult to choose! thanks for the black carpet tips, it's now completely out of the equation - phew!

  24. with a baby to come, I would say, the darker the better...

  25. I'll have to go with the one on the right too. And just to reinforce what has already been stated many times, black looks great when it is clean, but it will NEVER be clean. As the proud owner of a very dark brown rug I know what it means to see every little speck of dirt and dust. BTW ... we have a very similar wall colour and a bright persian rug. So if possible, go for colour.

  26. The middle one or black. The grey to the right is to similar to the wall colour. A petrol blue would have been perfect though.....Good luck:)

  27. Grey reminds me of office floors where they use them so much exactly to hide the specs of dirt. Also the grey is you and your hubbie compromising. In my opinion compromising can be the biggest crimes of all - you won't like it and neither your hubbie. You could go for a black carpet with a bright coloured rug or a bright coloured carpet with a black rug. At least one of you will be happy instead of none.

  28. hi. found your blog via english muse. your pictures are amazing!!!
ummm...about the carpet. NO NO and
NO to the black. i am thinking you should choose contrast. a tone to mimic wood and earth. however, if you choose a bright hue i would go with soemthing warm. although i am of the camp that too much bright color gets old fast. ok, so if i had to choose one of the carpets i would choose a wood floor with a gorgeous, colorful runner. :)

  29. I'm joining the middle (light grey) consensus -- Black will make your room too dark, and especially in London, you don't want that... BB

  30. black! it's so dramatic and bold. (think: stains will never show up!!!!)

  31. Jag lägger min röst på mitten.
